Staying Informed With Fad Diets As A Personal Trainer

Thousands of people are seeking advice from personal trainers and nutritionists in order to get in shape and lose fat by dieting and exercising properly. The good news for you as a trainer is more business and a better job outlook. However, the unfortunate news is that fad diets are being created and may not be what your clients need. It is part of our job as Personal Trainers to weed out the good and bad trends depending on our clients needs, goals, and overall health. You will be asked at some point about one or more of these fad diets, and you need to have an expert answer ready to maintain client confidence.

What exactly are Fad Diets?

Fad diets are the ones created by individuals who manipulate the regular methods being used for dieting and exercising. The approach is useful for various people, but you have to keep in mind that every person is different. What works for one client isn’t always guaranteed to work for another. Some fad diets include ones that manipulate macronutrient intakes such as a high protein or low-carb diet.
High protein is thought to help with losing fat since protein makes the body feel full and suppresses an individual’s appetite. Low carbohydrate fad diets are used to cause a metabolic switch, which as you may already know is when the body’s metabolism switches from using glycogen for energy and instead uses the fat storages.

Exercise fads could be something such as the Insanity workout or P90X, which is a high intensity interval training regimen where the person takes short breaks and experiences longer bursts of energy usage through the aerobic pathway.

You have to determine how these fad diets and exercise programs will affect your client. They have worked for many of the people that have participated in them, however the goal is to know if the client you are training is able to receive any benefits based on overall health conditions, past injuries, etc. Insanity may not be appropriate as a supplemental workout for a 65 year old Male with recent knee replacement surgery.

Use your expertise to help your client see the reality of these fad diets and exercises. If you have no idea what they are simply tell your client you will research it and get back to them quickly with an educated answer. Take advantage of all resources including the internet to your advantage. Go to the website for the diet or exercise regimen in question and educate yourself about the program or diet.
You could also use exercise news websites such as The Examiner and Livestrong to read posts on the latest trends so you have an idea before being asked about these industry trends. If you want definite information on a subject that has been researched, make sure to type in a specific phrase to be searched, which would be “site:.edu” or “site:.gov” followed by your search question.

For example, you want to know about the Atkins low carb diet, but want actually research results and not something anybody on the internet could have typed in. So you would search “site:.edu Atkins Diet benefits” in order to get a listing of the health benefits received from their special dieting techniques.

This information will help you determine what fads are okay for your client to try if they seem interested. After all, you are the expert and should know everything that is being discussed in the fitness and health news of today and yesterday!
